In Pakistan, the Indus Motor Company Limited (IMC) since 1989 has manufactured and marketed Toyota vehicles. This company is a joint venture between the companies of House of Habib of Pakistan, Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TTC) and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) of Japan.

Toyota’s journey in Pakistan has been slow but steady. In 1993, the company was manufacturing 20 vehicles per day. Now it is estimated that it makes 288 units per day. To date, the company claims to have sold more than 961,500 units in Pakistan.

In the passenger car category, various variants of Corolla and Yaris are popular in Pakistan. In the light commercial vehicle category, Hilux (various variants), and in the sports utility vehicle category, Fortuner (various variants) are popularly sold vehicles.

Toyota Corolla is one of the best selling cars in the world and Pakistan. While 12 generations of this iconic sedan have been launched globally, in Pakistan, the 11th generation is currently being manufactured and sold.

Toyota Corolla Generations

1st generation: (1966-1970) - Launched in 1966, the 1st gen Corolla came in 2-door and 4-door sedan and 2-door coupe and station wagon body types. It came in both 1.1L and 1.2L, 4 cylinder engines.

2nd generation: (1970-1974) - This gen was launched in 1970. It had the classic “coke bottle styling” design. It, too, came in different body type options including coupe, sedan, station wagon, etc. The engines ranged from 1.2L to 1.6L.

3rd generation: (1974-1979) - In this generation, Corolla was offered in a variety of body types, engines and chassis, etc.

4th generation: (1979-1983) - In this generation, too, Toyota offered a variety of options to Corolla buyers ranging from different body types (2-door and 4-door) and engine configurations (1300cc - 1600cc). 5th generation: (1983-1987) - In this generation, Corolla was available in 4 and 5-door variations. Engine displacement ranged from 1300cc to 1500cc.

6th generation: (1987-1991) - In this generation, engines ranging from 1300cc to 1600cc were offered. Diesel engine was offered in 1.8L.

7th generation: (1992-1997) - In this generation, engines ranging from 1500cc to 1600cc were offered. It was available in sedan, wagon and van body types.

8th generation: (1997-2001) - In this generation, engines ranging from 1300cc to 1600cc were offered. A 2.0L diesel engine variant was also available. The body types were the same as in the 7th generation.

9th generation: (2000-2006) - In this generation, engines ranging from 1500cc to 1800cc were offered. It was available in two body type options: 4-door sedan and 5-door wagon.

10th generation: (2007-2012) - In this generation, engines ranging from 1500cc to 1800cc were offered. The 10th generation Corolla sedan earned the nickname of Axio. It also won the 2007 Good Design Award.

11th generation: (2013-2018) - The present generation in Pakistan, this corolla is offered in 1300cc to 1500cc engine displacement.

In future, Toyota is expected to retain its Big 3 status in Pakistan.
